What this tool does
Paste two comparative P&L periods. The tool computes every variance in dollars and percent, flags the ones above your materiality threshold, and drafts Item 303 results-of-operations language for the variances the math alone can explain. Where a driver is needed, it asks you to name it: it never invents one, because invented drivers are how MD&A goes wrong.
Who it’s for
Controllers drafting MD&A under deadline, and reviewers checking that this quarter’s explanations are consistent with last quarter’s.
How to use it. Step by step
- Paste both periods. Straight from your trial balance or statements; the tool aligns the lines.
- Set your threshold. Percent, dollars, or both; only fluxes above it get flagged.
- Review the flags. Each one shows the math and either a draft or a request for the driver.
- Name the drivers it cannot know. The tool drafts the arithmetic; you supply the business reason. That split is the point.
How to read the result
A draft marked ready means the movement is explainable from the numbers alone. A flag asking for a driver means the tool refused to guess: answer it from what actually happened, and the sentence finishes itself.
Common questions
Does the AI make up explanations? No. Drafting is constrained to the arithmetic in front of it. Anything requiring business knowledge is handed back to you as a named question.
Does my P&L leave my browser? The variance math runs client-side. If you use the AI drafting step, the line items you submit are processed to generate the draft and are not retained as your identity.
